Cohort notes worth keeping for subscription apps

By Arisa Chanthara

Subscription apps live and die by how clearly you remember what changed. A cohort that looks weak may simply have joined during a price test or a buggy release. Without notes, every chart becomes a mystery novel.

Keep a shared timeline: price changes, paywall copy, free-trial length, and major feature launches. Attach the date and a one-line intent. During monthly stewardship calls we skim that timeline before opening retention charts.

Separate trial starters from paying renewals when your analytics allow it. Mixing them hides whether the problem is trial conversion or long-term value. If the tools are limited, at least tag campaigns that pushed aggressive trial offers.

End each month with three bullets: what improved, what worsened, and what you will not chase yet. That habit keeps growth work grounded in the product you actually ship, not in abstract targets.
